GOMA Restaurant | Gallery of Modern Art, Stanley Place, SOUTH BRISBANE QLD 4101

Whenever someone mentions GOMA Restaurant, the wattle seed custard dessert naturally comes to my mind. Like the snow egg at Quay, wattle seed custard is a must have dish when you visit the hatted restaurant located inside of one of Brisbane’s iconic buildings.

We visited the restaurant during our recent staycation at The Johnson. The space at the restaurant felt very open and bright; our table in the corner of the restaurant had a nice view of the cityscape on the opposite side of the Kurilpa bridge. The dining experience started on a good note with the delicately presented coral reef - fish, scallop, cauliflower, finger lime, oyster mushroom ($28) and the flavoursome suckling pig, chestnut, Davidson plum, blood and fodder ($28), but the main courses were even better. My duck, mushroom, quandong, leaves ($42) was so beautifully plated with bold coloured leaves placed here and there among the crispy skinned duck. Equally beautiful, was the other travel bunnie’s mutton, sorrel, sheep milk feta, saltbush, leek ($42); cooked in three different ways, the mutton was thoroughly enjoyed.

Now the heavyweight - wattle seed custard ($19). This dessert, created by the restaurant’s chef, Josue Lopez, is not only Instagram famous, it’s been enjoyed by world leaders at the G20 summit in 2014. So yeah, this ain’t your average dessert dish. Inspired by painter Rover Thomas, the presentation of this dish alone, is good enough to be in one of the exhibit rooms at GOMA. Two strips of pearl-like dots made from vanilla curd are gently placed on a layer of spray painted chocolate, its colour like the earth surrounding Ayers Rock, beneath you will find a delicate custard. Its flavour was nothing like what I was expecting; it was surprisingly subtle. The other travel bunnie had black forest - black garlic, bush cherry, brioche ($19), which tasted very unique, it was certainly not your average black forest cake.

It was a great dining experience paired with professional service. It would’ve been perfect if the restaurant had offered children’s meal options (having said that our waiter was very accommodating and suggested a burger from the GOMA Cafe Bistro), however Minibun George certainly didn’t have any complaints about the wonderfully smooth pomme puree ($10) as well as some crunchy haricot verts w’ garlic emulsion ($10).

Total Bunnie Dollars Spent: $215
